Polysiphonia is a large genus with about 200 species. The genus is represented in India by about 16 species found is southern and western coasts of India. Some common Indian species are P. ferulacea, P. urceolata and P. variegata. Most of the species are lithophytes i.e., found growing on rocks.

Polysiphonia is a genus of filamentous red algae with about 19 species on the coasts of the British Isles and about 200 species worldwide, including Crete in Greece, Antarctica and Greenland. Its members are known by a number of common names.

Polysiphonia stricta (Dillwyn) Greville. Also known as Polysiphonia urceolata and Polysiphonia spiralis. Description: Soft, slender cylindrical, usually densely tufted, deep red fronds, to 200 mm long, arising from a creeping rhizoidal base. Branching pseudodichotomous to distally alternate. Polysiphonia

The genus Polysiphonia comprises about 150 species and is entirely marine and grows in shallow and quiet water along the coasts of Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The genus also occurs in littoral and sub-littoral zones as well as in tidal marshes, brackish estuaries, etc. Many species of Polysiphonia also occurs as epiphytes on other plants. Polysiphonia brodiei (Dillwyn) Spreng. is a red alga belonging to the family Rhodomelaceae within the order Ceramiales (Rhodophyta). The specific name, recognizing the Scottish botanist James Brodie, was initially and incorrectly spelt “brodiaei”. Polysiphonia platycarpa is a common Indian species and found in the Kumari harbour.

A marine red alga that has polysiphonous construction. Each algae culture contains enough material for a class of 30 students. This culture requires a low light level (50 to 100 foot-candles of fluorescent light or fluorescent light from the ceiling).
